SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR A COLDER WEATHER
Your Skincare Routine For Cold Weather: How to Transition From Summer To Autumn
5 rules for great new season skin
So long summer! With the cooler temperatures comes a drop in humidity, causing skin to become more dehydrated and adding stress to your skin barrier.
You can also suffer from sensitivities and redness from the change in heat. Here, we share the five golden rules that will see your skin through the onset of the new season with aplomb…
#1 Keep cleansing thoroughly
As the first step in your routine, cleansing is key for keeping your skin fresh, clear and free of dirt, debris, pollution and leftover makeup, so that it can properly absorb products and repair itself overnight.
This is one area of your routine that you really don’t need to change when it comes to sorting your new season skincare routine.
Always cleanse both morning and night with a cleanser that works for your skin type. However, if your skin is dehydrated from the summer elements you could benefit by using a balm or oil cleanser for a few weeks to help replace lipids lost.
We love Aromatica’s Orange Cleansing Sherbet thanks to its luxurious melt-into-skin, balm-to-oil texture. It’s made with plant-derived canola oil and organic babassu seed oil to clean out pores and whisk away debris from the surface of your skin. But the best part of the formula is the orange peel extract. It not only helps to stabilise oil production, but it smells refreshingly citrusy too.
We think it’s ideal on its own or as a thorough first cleanse to remove all traces of impurities and makeup.
#2 Use a gentle exfoliator
Whatever your skin type, it can be more sensitive after months facing the onslaught of DNA-damaging UV rays, heat and humidity so when exfoliating it’s important to choose a chemical exfoliant over a physical scrub as they tend to be so much more gentle.
AHAs work by dissolving the glue that holds together the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, revealing the brighter, newer ones below them.
Mandelic acid is great for skin that’s a bit stressed and irritated as it helps to soothe and hydrate at the same time as exfoliating.
Try By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water which thoroughly yet gently exfoliates and includes hardworking botanicals that improve pigmentation, moisturise, soothe and reduce redness.
#3 Start with a toner-essence hybrid
Traditional toners are formulated to help remove any dirt or debris that might be leftover after cleansing and to prep your skin for the next step in your routine.
The beauty of a toner-essence hybrid formula is that they’re generally loaded with good-for-skin ingredients too so work to not only balance the skin’s pH but infuse it with the first step of repairing and nourishing ingredients too.
One of our favourites is By Wishtrend Quad Active Boosting Essence. It’s got nourishing propolis extract at its core as well as a whole host of antioxidants that boost collagen production and help repair damage done from UV rays.
#4 Layer on a barrier-strengthening serum
If there’s one thing to focus on when the change in weather comes around it’s hydration.
Whether pigmentation, fine lines or dullness is what’s bothering you, upping your skin’s hydration can both help it to keep your skin supple and plump and keep your skin’s natural repair processes running smoothly.
Look for a lightweight serum that can layer over an essence and under a cream that really focuses on hydrating ingredients like Centella Asiatica – great for reducing redness and soothing skin too – as well as everybody’s favourite, Hyaluronic Acid.
One Thing Centella Asiatica Serum is great for bolstering the delicate skin barrier as it packs both ingredients, including Hyaluronic Acid to help prevent dehydration.
#5 Seal it all in with a ceramide-spiked moisturiser
Ceramides and lipids are what you need when it comes to keeping all that renewed moisture in your skin.
They help to repair and reinforce a damaged skin barrier so water can’t escape from your skin so easily. By layering a ceramide-infused moisturiser overtop of a hyaluronic acid-based serum that works to create a layer over the skin.
Preventing moisture loss is especially important when the weather gets drier and colder. Oily or acne-prone skin types will want to look for a richer moisturiser but one that’s not too cloying and won’t clog pores.
I’m From Rice Cream is a mega skin-hydrator and nourisher but also helps to control breakouts and excess oil at the same time.
#6 Apply a hydrating face mask weekly
While it often feels like an excess step, there’s no denying the benefits of a weekly face mask application.
Due to the length of time and the concentation of ingredients masks often help to target your skin concerns, faster.
If it’s hydration your after, Beigic Softening Infused Mask banks on Green Coffee Bean Oil and Cacao Seed Extract to hydrate and nourish so skin looks healthy, plump and glows from within.
If you need some serious TLC, I’m From Mugwort Mask is chock full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals from Korean Mugwort extract.
You’ll see instant calming and healing results as well as clearer, brighter skin thanks to Mugwort’s unique detoxifying properties too.
If dullness is your woe, By Wishtrend Natural Vitamin 21.5% Enhancing Sheet Mask not only protects but helps repair your skin from the harmful effects of pollution and UV rays thanks to a potent form of antioxidant powerhouse Vitamin C; while Vitamin E from Green Tea Leaf Extract helps improve a rough, dry and dehydrated skin surface too. You’ll see calmer, plumper, more youthful skin after just 20 minutes.
